The $19 Dollar Scam

It was a very nice sunny day, perfect for hanging out in a park of trees, mowed lawns, and gentle breeze. So I was.

I lay on picnic table and opened a letter I just received in the mail.

Before you judge me please know that I was only 19. My family nor anyone near me had given me any business training. They were generations of employees.

But I wanted my own business. Every since I was 4 years old, I wanted to have my own business.

So as I lay there on the park table I held the letter above my head reading it against the pale blue sky background. I read it over, and over.

It seemed like a great offer, and, I could not see why it would not work.

I was about to be sucked into a very old scam. I did not know this was a scam and with my little experience I could not see that they were using tricky wording to obscond with my money.

They said they would pay me $1.00 for every envelope I would stuff.

At this point I know you just said, "Tim you sucker!" And remember I asked you not to judge me. But they did get me. They found another sucker.

What unscrupulous marketers such as that do is prey on the ignorant that have dreams of having their own business. They hurt honest people by exploiting their genuine desire to improve themselves. It is a nasty side of some of our society.

So I parted with the $19 dollars which at the time represented almost a full days labor.

And I anxiously waited for the instructions to come.

About 3 weeks later a reply was mailed to me with a letter of instructions on how to start stuffing envelopes for this company for $1.00 each.

Now in my mind I had imagined hiring a staff of people working at desks and piles of envelopes in front of them, stuffing them with flyers, literature, whatever it was this company needed stuffed in their envelopes.

With my limited business experience I did not logically conclude that in fact any company that needed to have envelopes stuffed would be much better off hiring their own people.

In addition, if it was a very large company there were machines that did envelope stuffing at great speed. The cost would only be a mere penny per envelope to handle this process.

So logically, no one would pay anyone $1.00 per envelope to stuff them. And usually you can discover a scam by logical process of thought.

But I had conjured up a large business in my mind fulfilling this service for this company. I was prepared to work all day and night every day of the week.

With all these plans in mind I read my instructions. In simple words this is what I was told to do:

1. Run classified advertisements in newspapers, magazines, and other places exactly like the one I had responded to orginally offering envelope stuffing jobs for $1.00 each.

2. When I receive enquiries I was to stuff it into an envelope and forward it back to this company.

3. They would then pay me $1.00 for every inquiry I gained for them.

I felt like I had just flushed 3 weeks, 19 dollars and a whole lot of hope down the toilet in that instance.

The letter when on to explain that perhaps I felt I was being cheated, but I could gain back my orginal investment by running these ads and getting others involved.

Were they crazy? Did they think I was going to justify cheating other people just because they were able to cheat me?

And so I had a business lesson that reminded me to always think logically through any offer to see if it made sense.

Now I would like to tell you that was the last time I got scammed. But I would be lying to you. Because of my intense desire to have my own business I was vunerable to many thieves ready to prey on the ignorant such as me.

But I took each time I got scammed as a lesson learning a bit more of what to not do to get scammed, but also having it drilled into my psyche what it felt like to be scammed.

I swore that some day I would find an honest business I could afford to get started with, and also some day I would have an honest opportunity to share with other people so fewer would be scammed by these horrid monsters of selfishness.

Lets talk about the current time. I am doing exactly what I said I would do.
